Tighten Your Belt

sung by Nicolae Ceaușescu

Nicolae Ceausescu

The Conducator (the Leader) - the Genius of the Carpathians

When & where

Ruled communist Romania as its dictator from 1965 to 1989 - the final decades of communist rule in Romania.

Known for

Romania's communist dictator: a towering personality cult, the colossal 'House of the People' palace, and a grim 1980s of rationed food, secret police, and cold, dark apartments.

The coolest thing they did

In 1968 he publicly condemned the Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia, openly defying Moscow. His stance won domestic support and Western admiration.

Fun fact

In 1974 Salvador Dali sent him a telegram 'congratulating' him on introducing a presidential scepter - a surrealist joke at his vanity. The telegram was reproduced in Scînteia, the party newspaper.

The human behind the legend

A farmer’s son from Scornicești who completed primary school, became a shoemaker’s apprentice, and rose through the Communist Party. On 21 December 1989, a rally organized to support him turned into public protest; the crowd booed during his televised speech. He and his wife Elena were executed together on Christmas Day, 1989.

  • ♦"My scientists wrote a diet plan, a scientific approach" - in 1982 the regime published a 'Programme of Scientific Nutrition for the Population', drawn up on Ceausescu's orders, which set lower official calorie norms and justified them as healthy eating. The Presidential Commission's Final Report (2006), printed p. 442, describes annual food allocations for 1982-1985 and subsequent reductions in the programme's daily calorie allowance: https://www.iiccmer.ro/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/RAPORT-FINAL_-CADCR.pdf#page=442
  • ♦"And the meat we didn't feed you? Oh, we sold it" - the real driver was the foreign debt: for most of the 1980s, food including meat was exported to earn hard currency while Romanians lived on rations.
  • ♦"Petrol's on a ration, so you walk" - private drivers got a small monthly petrol ration, and Sunday driving was restricted. Power cuts routinely stopped the lifts in apartment blocks, gas pressure was often too low to cook during the day, and homes were kept cold in winter.
  • ♦"Bread on a ration card, empty shelves from dawn to dawn" - bread, sugar, cooking oil and meat were rationed on coupons, and shop shelves were often empty.
  • ♦"we have our own special shops" - the Party elite (the nomenklatura) had access to restricted stores and supplies that ordinary Romanians never saw.
  • ♦"A helicopter got me out of here" - on 22 December 1989, as crowds poured through Bucharest and stormed the Central Committee building, Ceausescu and his wife Elena escaped from its roof by helicopter. They were caught the same day; on Christmas Day 1989 they were tried in about an hour and executed by firing squad.

Lyrics

I'm Nicolae Ceaușescu, Romania's fitness coach
My scientists wrote a diet plan, a scientific approach
Fewer calories for everyone, it's printed and it's signed
And the meat we didn't feed you? Oh, we sold it. Never mind

Bread on a ration card, empty shelves from dawn to dawn
That's portion control, comrade, and look, the weight is gone!

One, two, tighten your belt!
Three, four, it's good for your health!
Eat a little less, comrade, the Party calls it science
One, two, tighten your belt!

Petrol's on a ration, so you walk, it's good for your heart
The lifts stop when the power's off, so take the stairs, play your part
No gas to cook with in the day? That's fasting, eat at night!
Your flat's a fridge all winter? Shiver! That's burning fat, all right!

Sugar on a coupon, and the oil's on a coupon too
It's a strict program, comrade, but it's working. Look at you!

One, two, tighten your belt!
Three, four, it's good for your health!
Eat a little less, comrade, the Party calls it science
One, two, tighten your belt!

And the Party? Well, we have our own special shops, you see
With our own special shelves, purely for research, naturally

December came, and finally the whole country started running
Down every street in Bucharest, and all of them were coming
Straight for my building, the best workout of the year!
And me? I skipped the stairs. A helicopter got me out of here

One, two, tighten your belt!
Three, four, it's good for your health!
Christmas eighty-nine, a firing squad, and that's the end of class
One, two, tighten your belt!
