Someone Had to Stay
sung by Michael I
Michael I
Mihai I · the boy king · the last King of RomaniaWhen & where
Romania, in the 20th century (1921–2017) — recent enough to be within living memory. He was king twice: first as a five-year-old boy (1927–1930), then again as a young man through World War II (1940–1947).
Known for
The last King of Romania — remembered above all for the daring coup of 23 August 1944, when he flipped his country out of Hitler's war and over to the Allied side.
The coolest thing they did
On 23 August 1944, aged just 22, he summoned Romania's fascist military dictator, Marshal Ion Antonescu, to the palace, gave a pre-arranged code word, and had his own guards arrest him — then went on the radio that night to announce Romania was switching to the Allies. Historians credit the move with helping to shorten World War II.
Fun fact
When the guards hauled the arrested dictator away, they locked him in a small fireproof vault that Michael's father, ex-king Carol II, had built to protect his stamp collection. Romania's military dictator, held prisoner in a box made for postage stamps.
The human behind the legend
A shy, mechanically-minded man who loved cars and flying far more than politics — crowned as a small child, used as a puppet by a dictator as a teenager, and willing to act decisively when it counted most. The communists forced him out at 26 and exiled him for over 40 years, where he quietly worked as a test pilot and a farmer. Yet Stalin himself had given him the Soviet Union's highest military award, the Order of Victory — and this anti-communist king went on to outlive every other person who ever held it, dying its last living recipient in 2017.
References in this song
- ♦"You ran off to Paris with your mistress; I was four" - Michael's father, Crown Prince Carol, renounced his succession rights in December 1925 and left to live abroad with his mistress, Elena Lupescu. When King Ferdinand died in 1927, the crown passed over Carol to five-year-old Michael, who reigned as a child under a regency.
- ♦"You came back when I was eight and took it back" - Carol returned in June 1930, had himself proclaimed King Carol II, and demoted his own son back to crown prince. Michael's mother, Queen Helen, was pressured into leaving Romania soon after - the parents' separation and her exile marked Michael's whole childhood.
- ♦"You loaded up a train packed full of treasure" - after Romania was forced to cede huge territories in the summer of 1940, Carol II's rule collapsed and he left the country in September aboard a special train loaded with valuables, reportedly including paintings by old masters. Eighteen-year-old Michael became king again amid the wreckage.
- ♦"The afterthought you left behind arrested a dictator" - at 22, on 23 August 1944, Michael had Marshal Ion Antonescu - the dictator who had held real power while treating the young king as a figurehead - arrested in the palace, and flipped Romania from the Axis to the Allies overnight.
- ♦"We never spoke again, old man" / "When they buried you in Portugal... I didn't make the trip" - the first line is dramatic and literally inaccurate: Michael recalled speaking with Carol by phone and exchanging letters during exile. They never met again or reconciled. Carol II died in Estoril, Portugal, in 1953, and Michael did not attend the funeral. - ♦"I signed to keep a thousand breathing. You left to keep your gold" - the deliberate mirror of the two departures. Michael's later first-person accounts said he signed his forced abdication of 30 December 1947 after being threatened that 1,000 imprisoned students would be killed. His contemporaneous March 1948 statement described a threat of bloodshed but did not give that number or identify students, so the specific detail remains Michael's later account rather than independently settled fact. Carol's 1940 departure on a special train carrying valuables is documented; the lyric's motive is dramatic characterization.
- ♦"You died a guest in someone's country. I came home to a million people" - Carol II never returned to Romania alive; Michael, exiled over 40 years and stripped of citizenship, came back at Easter 1992 to an estimated one million people in the streets of Bucharest, and lived to be buried in Romania with royal honors in 2017.
Lyrics
My father taught me everything - by leaving. You ran off to Paris with your mistress; I was four. They set your crown on a five-year-old who couldn't say where you'd gone. You came back when I was eight and took it back without a word, Then you sent my mother out of the country - and I stopped waiting up for you. Your decade was a carnival: the scandals, the girls, the headlines. And when Romania caught fire - the summer of nineteen-forty - You loaded up a train packed full of treasure, and you ran. I was eighteen when you left us. Someone had to stay. Someone had to stay. You taught me how a crown gets dropped - I learned to hold one steady. Someone had to stay - For the mother that you banished, for the country that you spent, Through the marshal and the bombers, through the pistol and the page: Someone had to stay. So I stayed. I wasn't built like you. The spotlight made me quiet. I liked my engines honest and my promises kept. And the afterthought you left behind arrested a dictator: At twenty-two I flipped your burning country out of Hitler's war. We never spoke again, old man. There was nothing left to fix. And when they buried you in Portugal... I didn't make the trip. Someone had to stay. You taught me how a crown gets dropped - I learned to hold one steady. Someone had to stay - For the mother that you banished, for the country that you spent, Through the marshal and the bombers, through the pistol and the page: Someone had to stay. So I stayed. In the end they made me leave as well - the one thing I had sworn against - But I signed to keep a thousand breathing. You left to keep your gold. And through fifty years of exile, I never once unpacked. You died a guest in someone's country. I came home to a million people. Someone had to stay. For the vows you never kept, for the crown you kept mislaying, Through the strike, the page, the pistol, through the half a century of winter, I am Michael. I'm your son. And someone had to stay. My father taught me everything. I stayed.
